Briarcliff Residence Named Among “10 Amazing Homes” by Grand Designs UK

Grand Designs UK has recognized Briarcliff Residence as one of its 10 Amazing Homes, praising its innovative design, seamless integration with the landscape, and theatrical sense of discovery.

As the UK’s leading self-build and home design magazine, Grand Designs highlights extraordinary architecture and inspiring projects worldwide.

The article showcases Briarcliff Residence’s unique blend of storytelling and architectural ingenuity, drawing inspiration from Michigan farmsteads and the world of Harry Potter.

"Hidden in plain sight, this detached family home is tucked away in a protected hilly landscape near Franklin, Michigan. It belongs to an opera singer, his wife, and their three children, all of whom are involved in the performing arts," the article notes.

“Designed by architect David Iannuzzi, it nestles into the knolls in the landscape, some of which have been sliced with Corten-steel retaining walls, and a 100-year-old American elm was preserved as a striking feature. The design was influenced by Potter-ish ideas of concealment and surprise, and Michigan farmsteads, which are collections of gabled-roof structures built over generations,’ says David.

The cluster of four timber-clad buildings includes five bedrooms and two multipurpose rooms, and 550sqm of living space. The pitched roofs are covered with matt-black standing-seam steel.”
